First Things First perfect partner for VV Imagination Library

Jana Truman (far right), community outreach coordinator for First Things First said the learning environment for children under five is key to long-term success in school. First Things First, created by Arizona voters in 2006,  partners with parents and communities to help children arrive in kindergarten healthy and ready to succeed. First Things First programs support parents in their role as a child's first teacher, improving the quality of early learning in homes and child care centers. While 90% of brain development occurs before age 5, Jana adds kids that start behind, stay behind.  Verde Valley Rotary Clubs' Imagination Library is a perfect partner in kindergarten preparation. Club Rotarian Dr. Jean Barton, chair of the Imagination Library Committee, says reading to one to two month-old babies is significant because they are like sponges, learning immediately. "We can tell by age five who will be behind." Jean adds that 3,100 children have been enrolled in the Imagination Library program and 397 have graduated. Club President Jennette Bill announced the book "Flora and the Peacocks" will be donated to the Sedona Public Library on behalf of Jean and Jana.
