Literacy Project needs tutors

Carolyn Fischer, director of the Sedona Literacy Project (right) said the project provides second and third graders from West Sedona and Big Park School with tutors in reading and math. "The tutors help them get up to their grade level so they can read to learn," she said. The tutoring, she adds, gives confidence to help students succeed.  The all-volunteer program began in 1988 at Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church, where the Sedona Literacy Center is currently located. Several hundred Sedona primary students have been helped, with some of them making the honor roll in later years. Carolyn said the center continuously needs volunteers to provide one-on-one tutoring. Carolyn adds tutoring is very satisfying and important in the life of a child. She invites club members to visit the center and consider volunteering. Each volunteer is assigned a student to meet with twice a week for one-and-a half hours.
