Bill Welter discusses Sedona Community Needs Assessment

Rotarian Bill Welter reported on the Sedona Community Needs Assessment, a club project coordinated by Bill and members Miki Dzugan, Catherine Moore, Holli Ploog and Dave Thomas from the Rotary Club of Sedona Red Rocks. The assessment included interviews with community and organizational leaders to identify the most critical needs of Sedona's people. After sharing the information, Bill asked the club to help identify the most critical issues for an executive summary. The club overwhelmingly agreed critical needs to be addressed are: homelessness, hunger, mental illness, substance abuse, and funding for nonprofits trying to make a difference in these areas. Bill said the next step is to carry this message to community leaders and local government. Club members also voiced stepping up current projects to increase our help. Club President Jennette Bill thanked Bill for his work and announced the book "A Family is a family is a Family" will be donated to the Sedona Public Library on his behalf.
Meeting Highlights

Club remembers Rotarian Nick Chandler

by Jennette Bill
Many Rotarians, friends and family of Nick Chandler attended his memorial service on Friday, Jan. 20 at Church of the Red Rocks. Nick joined Rotary in 1996 and was an active member of our club starting in 2005. Among other involvements, he served on the Community Assessment Team and shared shifts with Dick Levy as bell ringers for the Salvation Army for many years. Nick was also very active on the boards of the Sedona Public Library, Keep Sedona Beautiful and the Sedona Forum. Dick Levy contributed memories of sharing time in Toastmasters and on the golf course, ending with a reading of a poem written by Nick. Several people mentioned Nick's beautiful Welch accent, his warm smile and his gentle-manly demeanor. At 95, Nick was driving and helping care for his wife up until the day before he went into the hospital with the pneumonia that eventually led to his passing. Nick was truly an inspiration in "service above self."

Rotary Honor Student passionate about helping people

The club recognized Red Rock High School student Samarah Elmer, who was presented with a $1,000 scholarship to attend the college of her choice. Samarah was introduced by RRHS counselor Dr. Elaine Rankin (far left). Elaine identified Samarah as "one precious human being," due to her fierce fighting for tolerance and social justice issues. Samarah has been involved in Student Council, Key Club, Interact, and many volunteer activities. She says biology is her favorite subject. Her senior exhibition addresses how autism affects the mind and body, an area she wants to specialize in. Samarah plans to attend Northern Arizona University and later medical school. She's not sure what the future holds, but wants "to work with children and help them in anyway that I can." Congratulations Samarah!
