Rotary Honor Student to attend Dartmouth College

Verde Valley School senior Jennie Harlan received a $1,000 Rotary Scholarship to the college of her choice during the club's March 1 meeting. Her teacher Scott Anderson (left) said Jennie is the student you want to have in your class. "She is the student you want to have when you think of student success," he adds. Jennie is co-president of the Student Body and an Admissions Ambassador for VVS. Last year she traveled to Malawi, Africa with eight other students who built a storage unit for a birthing clinic and a toilet block for a school. She said theater and activities fill her schedule outside of academics. She is most excited to begin her college career at Dartmouth this fall. Also pictured (L-R) is Rotarian Catherine Moore, Club President Tim Ernster and Jennie's parents Darryl and Genevieve Harlan.

Club inducts two new members

The club inducted two new members during its March 1 meeting. Kenyon Taylor (3rd Right), sponsored by new member Jerry Wesch (3rd Left), came to Sedona in 1994 so her daughter could attend Verde Valley School. She is a Big Sister and advocates a method for gentle birthing and bonding. "I am so thrilled to meet this group. I look forward to meeting and working with all of you," she said. Bonnie Best (2nd right) sponsored by President Elect Jennette Bill (Far Right), has been a Rotarian for 20 years. She has spent three decades as an educator and enjoys youth activities. Also pictured (L-R) is Rotarian Bill Minard, Kenyon's husband William Landau, and Club President Tim Ernster (in back).
Paul Amadio Visits Club

Verde Valley School promotes world citizenship

Paul Amadio, head of Verde Valley School (left), said the school and Rotary International have similar missions: service to the world. VVS, which has 120 students from 19 countries, offers a rigorous curriculum that includes a focus on environmental stewardship. "We must take care of our planet," Paul explains. VVS students manage school grounds and grow produce in the teaching garden, which they give to the Yavapai Food Council. Paul has spent three decades in independent school education and presents at conventions nationally and internationally on marketing, philanthropy and sustainability. Club President Tim Ernster announced the "Book of Nature Poetry" will be donated to the Sedona Public Library to honor Paul's visit to the club.

Youngberg asks club to gear up for ShelterBox Challenge

March 15 is the date for the 2016 ShelterBox USA Challenge. Dick Youngberg asks we bring our checkbooks and donate to help raise $500. He said the International Committee has voted unanimously to match whatever is raised during the meeting. The need for ShelterBoxes is great. World disasters such as the plight of Syrian refugees, the typhoon in Fiji, and other relief efforts all needing our help, he said. Your donation is 100% tax deductible. ShelterBoxUSA is a 501 (c) (3) charity. Rotary is ShelterBox's first project partner and Rotary International's only disaster relief partner. Dick will have tax receipts available. Have your checkbooks ready with the top line reading "Rotary Club of Sedona Charitable Fund" and the memo line "ShelterBox Challenge." In 2014, the club raised $500 from members in eight minutes, which was matched by the International Service Committee. We funded a ShelterBox which went to a location in South Africa where 200,000 people had been displaced by flooding, Dick said. He encourages us to check out the ShelterBox website: http://www.ShelterBoxUSA.org
