Club loads books bound for Africa

The club packed two U-Haul trucks during a load-up party at Club President Jennette Bill's home on Nov. 7. About 12,000 pounds of books, or nearly six tons were loaded. The club's project coordinator John Crawford said that equates to 15,000 school books. John and the trucks headed to Houston, where the books will be loaded into containers bound for Rotary Clubs in Africa under the program called "Books for the World" run by the Rotary Club of Houston. The local clubs will distribute them to needy schools in Africa.  “It's a wonderful way to give these used, but now discarded or replaced, school books a new life to help in the education of students in these third-world countries and make a difference,” he said. Since 2000, Houston’s “Books for the World” program has shipped 12 million pounds of books to schools in Africa and India. "We are just starting in their program, but we hope to be able to collect and ship a truck-load to them at least annually,” John said. The club thanks all those for collecting and donating the books: Red Rock High School, West Sedona School, Big Park Community School, Verde Valley School, Sedona Public Library and individuals. And big thanks to all those who attended the load-up party.

Exchange Student Daniel Bouvin visits club

Swedish Exchange Student Daniel Bouvin visited the club Nov. 8 to share how his exchange year is going. Daniel, a junior, is an avid athlete participating on Red Rock High's football and soccer teams. Excited to win their homecoming game, Daniel said he's had "a perfect start in getting to know a lot of people." He recently celebrated his 18th birthday, a milestone in Sweden, by hiking down to Havasupai with a friend from Denmark. He's also enjoyed a Diamondbacks game in the three months he's been here. Club President Jennette Bill presented Daniel with several stipends. Exchange students earn $100 a month. Daniel thanked the club for its support.
