Rotary Scholarship alumna shares the impact on her career

Red Rock High School graduate Catherine Chapman shared the opportunities her Rotary Scholarship provided. Now a student at Pepperdine University, Catherine is majoring in pre-law and psychology and graduates in 2019. Catherine was previously a Rotary Exchange Student, studying in Florence, Italy. She also visited 13 other countries. "The people really made the trip a great experience," she said. Catherine told about her most recent experiences as an intern for the U.S. Department of State in the office of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement. There she was able to meet U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. She also attended various congressional hearings. Her next adventure is a stint in 2018 at the U.S. Embassy in Colombia.  Catherine thanks the Rotary Club of Sedona for its support. "To be accepted into Pepperdine and the State Department, I have Rotary to thank for that." Club President Dave Young announced the book "The Hidden Life of a Toad" will be donated to the Sedona Public Library on Catherine's behalf. We wish you the best Catherine!

Village Satellite Club receives update on Big Park School Board

Heather Hermen, Sedona School Board Dist. 9 Member and member of the Village Satellite Club, gave an update of school board progress since her term began. "School board members have many responsibilities that need to be taken seriously," she said. The school board training handbook became very important. Next the board realized there was a great need for better communication in and for the school district. As this is Heather’s profession, it was natural for her to take a leadership role in developing a communications plan. The board also reevaluated teacher compensation and implemented a new plan based on performance evaluation rather than tenure. She praised the community for rallying around Big Park School. The school development plan has inspired the board to discuss planning for the other Sedona schools. With help from a team-building professional, who donated her time to the board, the current board is handling disagreements in a professional and productive manner.
The presentation ended with an explanation and discussion of the override which needs to be renewed to provide school funding.
A video of Hermen’s presentation is available at https://www.facebook.com/pg/RotaryClubSedonaVillageSatellite/videos/
