Karin Ward receives honorary PHF Award

Beaver Creek Schools Superintendent Karin Ward (center) holds her honorary Paul Harris Fellow certificate for her leadership in expanding the club's Imagination Library program in the Beaver Creek area. Rotarian Miki Dzugan (2nd left-front) recommended Karin for the recognition, donating some of her PHF points, along with club contributions for this purpose. Karin, whose father was a Rotarian, said he would be especially proud. "I want to thank the group of people up here for the help they have provided. When you work with children in poverty, you know that they also don't have books. We can make a difference," Karin said. Also pictured are: (L-R Front) Dick Youngberg, Linda Clark, Jean Barton, (L-R Back) Ken Dzugan, David Simmer, Tim Ernster, Dave Young, and Jennette Bill.

Club learns about Palatki Heritage Site

Craig Swanson, a docent at the Palatki Heritage Site, talked about the ancient peoples that traveled to and from the Southwest and South America and the people that built the site. Craig said the Sinagua People lived here in 650 A.D. and were mysteriously gone by 1450 A.D. The Palatki Site was one of two largest cliff dwelling sites in Red Rock Country between 1150 and 1350 A.D. He said the Red Rock District of the Coconino National Forest has the largest group of volunteers, donating over 27,000 hours per year. Volunteer opportunities available include: docent, staff visitor center, trail maintenance, graffiti removal, trail patrol, and monitor water levels. Club President Tim Ernster announced a children's book will be donated to the Sedona Public Library in honor of Craig's visit to the club.
