Verde Valley Imagination Library celebrates 5th Anniversary

The Verde Valley Imagination Library celebrated its 5th Anniversary March 23  with a party during Story time at the Sedona Public Library. In addition to stories and games, a special guest dressed as the Cat in the Hat, delighting children. The program has provided five years of free books through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library to children infant-aged to Kindergarten. Registration for the program began in March 2012 by the Rotary Club of Sedona with a launch party at Sedona Public Library's two locations in Village of Oak Creek and West Sedona. Soon each registered child began receiving a free, age-appropriate book in the mail from the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. After learning about Dolly Parton's IL Program, Rotarian David Simmer, with support of then Youth Services Chair, Jennette Bill, convinced the Rotary Club to establish the project with hope the program would have community support needed to continue in Sedona and grow to neighboring communities. And the support came. Many supporters of the Great Sedona Chili Cook-Off are motivated by the program and have become subscription contributors with monthly or annual contributions.  Read more . . .
After learning about Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program, Rotarian David Simmer with the support of then Youth Services Chair, Jennette Bill, convinced the Rotary Club to take on the project with the hope that the program would have the community support needed to continue in Sedona and grow to neighboring communities. The support has been wonderful. Many supporters of the Great Sedona Chili Cook-Off are primarily motivated by the Imagination Library program and several people have become subscription contributors with monthly or annual contributions. - See more at: http://sedonarotary.org/Stories/imagination-library-5th-anniversary#sthash.O4vP8woi.dpuf

Honor Student prepares for forensic psychology career

During last Tuesday's meeting, the club honored Morgan Leigh Bailey, Verde Valley School senior, for her academic achievements. Director of College Counseling, Meg Haesloop, said selecting Morgan was an easy decision. "She really exemplifies the spirit of the school. She has a hunger for knowledge and learning news concepts and applying them." In addition to her studies, Morgan is passionate about helping others. Last summer she traveled to Malawi, Africa to help build pit latrines and distribute 3,000 pairs of eyeglasses. For the past four years she has been part of the Backpacks for Kids food program for Yavapai County. Morgan also enjoys the theater and singing clubs and her equestrian teams. She plans to attend Chapman University, Orange, Calif., with a double major in psychology and neurobiology to prepare for a career in forensic psychology. Good luck Morgan!

Constru Casa builds permanent homes in Guatemala

Village Rotary Club member John Lothrop shared his volunteer experiences, during the club's March 28 meeting, with Constru Casa, an organization that replaces houses for low-income Guatemalans. The nonprofit's mission is to improve the quality of life of Guatemalans living in extreme poverty by providing basic housing and community development projects related to health and education. John has participated in the program since 2012. He helps build block houses, ranging one room in size to three rooms plus a bathroom, and metal roofs. The new houses replace others built of cornstalk walls or mud and sticks, and dirt floors. The new homes are like the Taj Mahal to families, John said. He plans to return January 2018 to build another home. Club President Jennette Bill announced the book "An Ambush of Tigers" will be donated to the Sedona Public Library on behalf of John's presentation.  For more information on Constru Casa go to: http://www.construcasa.org/en/
