After learning about Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program, Rotarian David Simmer with the support of then Youth Services Chair, Jennette Bill, convinced the Rotary Club to take on the project with the hope that the program would have the community support needed to continue in Sedona and grow to neighboring communities. The support has been wonderful. Many supporters of the Great Sedona Chili Cook-Off are primarily motivated by the Imagination Library program and several people have become subscription contributors with monthly or annual contributions. - See more at: http://sedonarotary.org/Stories/imagination-library-5th-anniversary#sthash.O4vP8woi.dpuf

Buena Vista educates on prevention of child abuse

Erin Mabery (center), executive director of Buena Vista Children's Services discussed child abuse and its prevention during the club's April 11 meeting. Household situations that can acerbate child abuse include mental illness, drug use, alcohol abuse, mother's treated violently. Erin said one third of rural Arizona households have two or more of these dysfunctions. In the Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District, Erin said 62% of children are economically disadvantaged and 67% are eligible for free/reduced lunches. Buena Vista helps families recognize the signs so intervention can take place. The organization offers parenting classes, pre-K education, after school programs, trains daycare providers, family screening treatment, crisis centers, family support services, and more. Erin said early prevention is key and gave kudos to the Verde Valley Imagination Library program, chaired by Dr. Jean Barton (right). Club President Jennette Bill (left) announced the book "88 Instruments" will be donated to the Sedona Pulbic Library on Erin's behalf. Keep up the great work Erin!
