John Crawford gets books ready to send to Africa and/or India

Club member John Crawford has just finished packing 4,000 pounds of books now awaiting transport to a needy school in Africa and/or India. The books will be sent to a sister club in Houston, Texas, which gathers books from around the U.S., shipping them regularly to Rotary clubs in Africa and/or India, which distribute them to the neediest schools. Crawford said the idea came to him when his son spent a semester teaching math at a village school in Tanzania. “James reported back to me that his class of 23 had to share just one math textbook—yet here in the U.S. we throw away tons of textbooks every year.”
John collected discarded books from Red Rock High School (thanks to RRHS Principal Darrin Karuzas), schools in Cottonwood, and Sedona Public Library.
“Thanks to Dick Youngberg and Dick Weisbaum, we are able to join Houston’s “Books for the World” program. Since 2000, they have shipped 12 million pounds of books to schools in Africa and India. We are just starting in their program, but we hope to be able to collect and ship a truck-load to them at least annually,” John said. Schools and libraries which have books to discard can contact John Crawford at john@uscrawford.com to arrange pick-up.

Spreading kindness throughout the world

Three speakers representing SedonaKind shared how they are inspiring kindness throughout Sedona and the world. The group's brand inspirations are kindness charms made from broken, recycled, and surplus donated jewelry. The group has distributed over 4,000 charms throughout the U.S. and over three dozen countries. Charms appear laying on benches, hanging from branches and draped over rocks and other objects. The charms all have tags that say "Take me home and spread kindness."  SedonaKind is a project of Cornucopia Community Advocates. Please visit its website for upcoming events such as: World Kindness Day on Nov. 13 and 5,000 acts of kindness in 15 days. Go to: http://www.sedonakind.org/community-projects.html. Club President Jennette Bill announced the book titled "El violin de Ada" will be donated to Sedona Public Library on behalf of (L-R) Gloria Woody, Katie Hamilton, and Gail Moore.
