Honor Student Sophia Hermosillo

Sophia Hermosillo Rotary Honor Student

Rotarian Lori Zaleski and Club President Tim Ernster presented Sophia Hermosillo (2nd left) with a $1,000 scholarship award to a college of her choice for her outstanding academic achievement. Sophia lives with her mother Jeannette Ramos (2nd right) and twin sister Sarah (center). She spent her first eight years in Mexico at which time her family moved to California. At age 13 her family moved to Sedona where she has excelled in her studies, school activities and community services. Her accomplishments include Editor-in-Chief of the Sting Newspaper and the Literary Magazine; Secretary of the National Honor Society and Secretary of the Interact Club. She also attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program during her junior year. "RYLA is what inspired me today," she said. Sophia’s senior exhibition project is about natural/artificial multiple births and how with the advent of techniques such as invitro fertilization multiple births have become much more common. She hopes to become an educator or a registered nurse for children and is interested in attending ASU.

Club calls for nominations for Make a Difference Award

The club seeks to honor a non-Rotarian in our community who has made a significant contribution to life in Sedona. The Club will accept nominations of individuals through Dec.18, 2015. Nomination forms can be obtained at the Rotary Club website: www.sedonarotary.org or by contacting Dave Young, Club Secretary, dvdng796@gmail.com.

The Paul Harris Fellowship: Make-A-Difference Award voting will be based on a candidate’s ethics in dealings with others, efforts in consensus building, and accomplishments that enhance life in our community for residents and visitors alike. These criterions reflect the foundation principles and the Four Way Test of the 1.2 million members of Rotary International and its founder, Paul Harris. The Rotary Four Way Test states that members should conduct their lives in the following manner: Is it the Truth; Is it Fair to All Concerned; Will it Build Goodwill and Better Friendships; Will it be Beneficial to All Concerned? Bert Harclerode was the first honoree of the award, presented in June 2015, for his work as Director of Chamber Music Sedona. For more information email the club president at arizernie@aol.com
