Friends of the Verde River protecting Verde River basin
The Verde River is one of the last free flowing rivers in the Southwest and is in danger of running dry, said Nancy Steele, executive director of Friends of the Verde River. Friends, established in 2011, works to help protect the Verde River basin, which includes Oak Creek and 13 cities in the watershed. The Verde River is also a federally important river and has a Wild & Scenic Rivers Act designation because of its bio diversity, recreational opportunities, and as a bird byway. Friends has an expansive range of programs to help sustain the river which include habitat improvement, channel restoration, flow restoration, and sustainable river recreation while continuing to engage the community through outreach and volunteer programs, said Kegn Moorcroft, stewardship and development manager. The club announced the book "Lula & the Sea Monster" will be donated to the Sedona Public Library on behalf of Nancy and Kegn's presentation during the club's Oct. 13 meeting.
