Exchange student Kierya Shelley prepares for Germany

President Elect Dave Young presents outbound exchange student Kierya Shelley with a  club flag she'll give to the Rotary Club in Berlin, Germany. Kierya, a Red Rock High School senior, is thrilled to study abroad in Germany and learn a new language. A little nervous, she says she's excited to go to a new school and meet new people. "I'm hoping to grow as a person and become stronger," she adds. Of course, having fun is on her list too. She thanked the club for its support and for presenting her with the banner. Also pictured is Youth Services Committee Chair Catherine Moore.

Sean Fagan shares insights on China

Sean Fagan, director of Admission and Financial Aid for Verde Valley School discussed his observations of China during the club's July 12 meeting. Sean said his fascination with China resulted in living and teaching there for four years. He contrasted the educational systems of China and the U.S. In China, students rigorously study to take tests versus an emphasis in the U.S. on critical thinking and problem solving. While China doesn't like Western learning, many Chinese parents opt to send their children to Western schools because they know problem solving and collaboration are important in today's world. He said he has high hopes for U.S. relations with China and that exchanges like this are good. President Elect Dave Young announced the book titled "Three Magic Balloons" will be donated to the Sedona Public Library on behalf of Sean's visit to our club.
