Former Sedona Mayor Rob Adams discusses substance abuse

Former Mayor of Sedona Rob Adams spoke to the Sedona Rotary Club on Oct. 18 about the serious problem of substance abuse in Sedona. He said “substance abuse is the number one health problem and cause of anti-social and destructive behavior in the U. S. So, why should we be concerned about substance abuse in Sedona? According to the results of a bi-annual survey conducted by the Arizona Criminal Justice Commission to school districts throughout the State of Arizona, Sedona school children are generally using drugs at a higher rate than the state average. During the last six years, this trend has accelerated. The Yavapai County Methamphetamine Task Force (MatForce) and the Greater Sedona Area Substance Abuse Committee are working to address this disturbing trend through education and treatment programs. If you would like more information or would like to join our efforts, please contact Rob Adams at 639-3503 or google MatForce.org

Club learns about Sumo Wrestling

Andrea Terhune, wife of club Rotarian John Terhune, sported her Sumo Wrestling outfit while sharing the history and culture of this traditional Japanese sport during the Oct. 25 club meeting. The Terhunes were introduced to the sport during the three years they lived in Tokyo. During that time, Andrea met some of Sumo Wrestling's celebrities. She said the earliest record of the sport is 712 A.D. It later became the sport of the Imperial Court. The wrestlers live a regimented life of early morning practice, two huge meals, and napping to gain weight. Andrea said they typically have health issues and live up to about 60 years of age. She added the wrestlers are incredibly agile during competition. John assisted Andrea in her presentation, dressed representing a Shinto Priest. The priests act as referees. Club President Jennette Bill announced the book titled "Los Animales Mas Mortales" will be donated to the Sedona Public Library in honor of Andrea's visit.
