Five Wishes to ease end of life care

Club member Susan Turner (right), executive director of Accord Hospice, shared with the club during its April 18 meeting the importance of making end of life decisions to assure the care you want and alleviate this burden on loved ones. Susan said it's important to have discussions with family about end of life directives. The tool she recommends is "Five Wishes," recognized in 42 states including Arizona. Five Wishes helps you determine: (1) the person you want to make decisions for you when you can't; (2) the kind of medical treatment you want or don't want; (3) how comfortable you want to be; (4) how you want people to treat you; and (5) what you want your loved ones to know. Susan gave Five Wishes booklets to members at the meeting. She said the directives will need two witnesses after filling out to become legal and valid. She encourages giving copies to your physicians and to have copies available for family members and when you are admitted to a hospital. If you would like a Five Wishes booklet contact Susan, or go to: http://www.agingwithdignity.org  Club President Jennette Bill announced the book "Dog" will be donated to the Sedona Public Library on Susan's behalf.
After learning about Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program, Rotarian David Simmer with the support of then Youth Services Chair, Jennette Bill, convinced the Rotary Club to take on the project with the hope that the program would have the community support needed to continue in Sedona and grow to neighboring communities. The support has been wonderful. Many supporters of the Great Sedona Chili Cook-Off are primarily motivated by the Imagination Library program and several people have become subscription contributors with monthly or annual contributions. - See more at: http://sedonarotary.org/Stories/imagination-library-5th-anniversary#sthash.O4vP8woi.dpuf

Club provides funds for clothing for victims of violent crimes

The club recently provided a $500 gift card for purchase of clothing and toiletries for victims of violent crime. The Yavapai Family Advocacy Center is the single organization in Yavapai for which forensic exams are performed after reporting rape or other violent crimes. Often the clothing worn into the center is torn and no longer wearable or must be removed and saved as evidence. Also, showers are administered following an exam and the center needs toiletries and other supplies.  YFAC Director Missy Sikora (right), holds the gift card, along with Jami Tiefenthaler, office administrator and back up forensic interviewer.
