Bonds crucial in early childhood development

Club member Dr. Jean Barton, discussed the facets of early childhood development during the Feb. 2 meeting. She said 90% of brain development happens before 5 years of age. "The foundations start at conception or before," she said, and adds, "Neglect and deprivation are the most common causes of mild mental retardation."  Jean became interested in the club because of its Imagination Library project. As the new chair, coupled with her experience as a pediatrician, Jean outlined the program's goals to increase: the number of books in the home;

literacy activities at home; parent-child positive interaction; child interest in reading; and parent awareness of the child's reading level. In recognition of her speaking, Club President Tim Ernster said the book "Beep! Beep! Go to Sleep" will be donated to the Sedona Public Library in her honor.
