Fifth Tuesday Event at Verde Valley Archaeology Center

Ken Zoll, Executive Director, Verde Valley Archaeological Center

Rotary Club Members and guests enjoyed a private tour of the Verde Valley Archaeological Center hosted by the Center's Executive Director Ken Zoll.

As guests sipped tea or wine, Zoll explained how the Center was founded in 2010 by members of the Verde Valley Chapter of the Arizona Archaeological Society with the goal of keeping the artifacts found in the Verde Valley in a local facility for exhibition and study.  Camp Verde became the organization's home, because free space was available for meetings. The current facility was offered on a ten-year lease for $1 a year including utilities (!) by the Camp Verde Town Council because of the Center's role in attracting visitors to the town.

The Center has acquired about 15 acres of land near the intersection of  Highways I17 and 260, which has been determined to contain 6 pit houses and an unknown feature that would benefit from additional study.  A capital campaign is currently underway to study the features and build a new campus to house collections, create an interpretive park of the site, create a new museum and classrooms.

Viewing the Museum

After Zoll's presentation and a brief video, the group abandoned their beverages and entered the museum to view the displays, check out the museum shop and a couple of people signed up to become some of the Center's nearly 1000 members.

And Then to Verde Brewing Co.

After what seemed like too short of time to peruse the exhibits and shop, the group moved on to enjoy wine or craft beer and a buffet of salad, spicy tacos and carrot cake.
Verde Brewing Co. participated in the Great Sedona Chili Cook-Off this year.
