Rotary & CoEd breaking poverty cycle in Guatemala

Rotarian Rebecca Wilks (left) introduced Gina Regan and Garrett Fenchel from Cooperative Education, who told how Rotary International has partnered with CoEd to break the cycle of poverty in Guatemala through education. Gina said Guatemala is the least educated and poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Fifty percent of the people cannot read or write and 80% of the children drop out of school by the 7th grade. Both Gina and Garrett shared student testimonials and successes of the program. About $3.6 million has been raised by Rotary and global and matching grants. About 43 computer centers have been built and 162,700 students are benefiting. Gina said more help is needed. She invites members to visit and experience Guatemala and/or sponsor a student for $70 per month. For more information go to: www.cooperativeforeducation.org

ShelterBox Challenge shatters previous records

Club members stepped up big during the March 15 meeting, raising $1,090 in five minutes. "Thanks to the generosity of our members and guests this time we more than doubled our goal," said Dick Youngberg. "Once again the International Service Committee will match the donations which will provide $2,180.00.  This will more than fund two ShelterBoxes which may go to Fiji for typhoon relief or possibly to Western Europe to assist in housing some of the thousands of Syrian refugees who have recently escaped from their homeland."  The needs ShelterBoxUSA addresses are wide spread and donations will provide much needed assistance. ShelterBoxUSA is an Official Rotary Project Partner and the only disaster relief charity with Which Rotary International is affiliated. Dick adds, "The Committee thanks our donors who responded so quickly and generously. You were all great!" For more information go to the ShelterBox website: http://www.ShelterBoxUSA.org
