Four tons of books and growing

The collection of books bound for Africa and/or India is nearly 4 tons, says the project's coordinator, Rotarian John Crawford. And the books keep coming thanks to schools throughout the Verde Valley. Here John packs books with the help of (L-R) his grandson Alex Crawford, 10, Megan Carder, teacher at West Sedona School, and his wife Veronika Crawford. John is going to Big Park Elementary School next and then to Cottonwood schools. The books are being stored in several club member garages. The club's International Committee Chair Dick Youngberg says more storage space is needed. If you have space in your garage please contact John or Dick. John said he plans to haul the books to Houston in October.

More foster parents and CASAS needed in Verde Valley

Jacqueline Smoller, (right) president of CASA Children's Center, says Arizona seriously lacks enough foster care for the 18-19,000 children who need it. She said the state only has 4,500 licensed foster parents. The rest of the children are in group homes or kinship care, with family, neighbors, or their church. The Verde Valley, she adds, has only 20 foster families. To enhance the lives of children in foster care here in the Verde Valley, the CASA Children's Center and CASA volunteers provide opportunities for children to live normal lives. CASAS, who are count appointed special advocates, spend time with the children and make recommendations to the court regarding their best interests. Club President Jennette Bill announced the book titled "Snail & Worm" will be donated to the Sedona Public Library on behalf of Jacqueline's visit to the club.

What's up with the Village Satellite Club?

Club President Jennette Bill explains the purpose and advantages of our new Village Satellite.  She said their members "are members of our club, the Rotary Club of Sedona. The satellite will adopt bylaws similar to ours and have a managing board. The goal will be to maintain a symbiotic relationship between the two groups meaning: we help them and they help us. They will have a representative on our board and we will enjoy joint activities like the fifth Tuesday events and the holiday get together. We are already seeing the Satellite Club bringing back former Rotarians such as Harvey Grady and Jim Riechert, and retaining current Rotarians who were considering resigning because of work constraints (Lori Zaleski and Alan Bostock) as they can fit the different meeting time and location into their schedules. Members of the parent club will always be welcome to drop in at the Satellite Club meetings to hear the speakers and share the camaraderie of our fellow Rotarians for the cost of your cup of coffee or breakfast." The club is planning a launch event on Sept. 22.
