John Crawford shares Celtic poetry in native Scottish kilt

A National Public Radio interviewer recently said we can all use more poetry in our lives. Well, John Crawford delivered that during the club's March 14 program by reciting Robert Burn's most famous multi-page poem, "Tam O'Shanter." A standing ovation John received. Burn is the national poet of John's native Scotland. He was born in 1759 to a poor tenant-farmer family in rural Ayrshire. In his prolific but very short career he produced over 500 poems and songs, many of which are still at the top of our consciousness today, such as "Auld Lang Syne" and "Oh My Love Is Like A Red Red Rose," and many a favorite "Tae A Fert." John introduced the group to Burn's deeply compassionate poem, "To a Mouse." He recited both poems in the dialect known as "Broad Scots." Unfortunately, Burn, like many a genius, John said, died in poverty at age 37. Club President Jennette Bill thanked John for his incredible performance and announced the book "Sea Rex" will be donated to the Sedona Public Library on his behalf.
