Meeting Highlights

Northern Arizona Retired Nurses in Action receive Make a Difference Award

The Northern Arizona Retired Nurses in Action group was the recipient of the club's 2021 Make a Difference award. Two founding members of the group, Carol Cain (left) and Carol Bryant, were recognized during the club's Installation event on July 6. The group was selected because about 15 of their members were part of Verde Valley Caregivers' mobile teams that provided over 400 in-home COVID vaccinations for homebound older adults throughout Sedona and the Verde Valley. The retired nurses also volunteered early in the pandemic to make over 800 phone calls to older adults to provide information, reassurance, and assess current needs for groceries and medications. Once vaccinations were available, the nurses teamed up again to let neighbors know VVCC can help register them for appointments and arrange for transportation. NARNIA partners with other groups and churches to raise scholarship funds for nursing students. On behalf of the club and NARNIA, the $1,000 award will be split between Verde Valley Caregivers and the Florence Nightingale Nursing Scholarship established at Yavapai College Foundation.

Jamiss Sebert receives Silent Rotarian award

Jamiss Sebert was recognized as the club's 2021 Silent Rotarian during the July 6 Installation ceremony. Jamiss was selected for her dedicated work as Interact coordinator and helping with RYLA for many years. She has also served on the club's Scholarship Committee, helped with the 5th and 6th Grade Four-Way Test recognitions, and represented the club at this year's Red Rock High School Scholarship Presentations. She will lead the Youth Services Committee during 2021-22 and is interested in starting a RoterAct Club in the area for young professionals. She previously served as Foreign Exchange Coordinator in her former Stamford, Ct Club. She is a member of Christ Lutheran Church and works with the outreach committee. Congratulations Jamiss!

Hope House celebrates Groundbreaking

Hope House held its official ground-breaking ceremony on June 1. John Lothrop, president of Hope House of Sedona Board of Directors spoke about the project during the club's June 15 meeting. The home will consist of one bedroom and bathroom suite for the live-in manager and three other bedrooms sharing two bathrooms, accommodating two to three families or up to 10 people. The purpose of Hope House is to provide housing while families find permanent housing. Families can stay days and up to six months. John said they have enough to build the house but need $100,000 to make it move-in ready. Annual expenses are projected to be $50,000. The club's Community Services Committee will discuss ways the club can help support the project. Club President Al Barton announced the book "Me & Momma" will be donated to the Sedona Public Library on behalf of John.
