Hope House Walk-a-thon

Sedona Rotarians & high school students support Walk-A-Thon for Hope House

Sedona Rotarians and Red Rock High School students participated in the May 7 Walk-A-Thon for Hope House sponsored by Sedona Red Rock Interact (Rotary International) and Key Club (Kiwanis International). Students of both clubs organized the event to raise funds for the newly opened Hope House, which is ready to house homeless families with children, providing them with transitional housing, support services and food. A ribbon cutting for the new home was held on April 12 with city leaders and members of the local community and faith groups. Hope House is currently looking for a house manager. The following volunteers are also needed including: caseworkers to work directly with the families on their case plans and follow-up, a background in psychology, counseling, and/or social work is required; a person to lead the volunteer team, working to recruit and place volunteers; a person(s) to work with residents on financial planning (financial background necessary); and people to provide relief on Saturdays for the house manager. To volunteer contact galel.hopehouse@gmail.com.

Meeting Highlights

Rotary is family affair

Thirty-four years ago Linda Allen became a Rotarian, but her family's relationship with Rotary began with her daughter Karen in 1978. "Our daughter Karen heard an announcement about Rotary at school and wanted to be an exchange student. She spent her senior year, 1978-1979 in Brazil." Shortly after, in 1979, Linda's husband Ray joined Rotary. He soon joined the District 7150 Youth Exchange Committee, which he chaired for several years in a district that exchanged 25 to 30 plus students each year in the days before computers and email.  "We have hosted upwards of 15 students in our home," Linda adds, "several of whom remain part of our family today." In 1983, their daughter Katy did a summer exchange in Scotland. And in 1987, Ray helped establish a scholarship for his New York district outbound students, a program that Linda continues to facilitate today. Ray continued to be an active Rotarian and a member of the district youth exchange committee until his death eight years ago. Linda's acceptance into Rotary in 1988 is historical. In 1987 the Supreme Court found that Rotary International did not have a First Amendment right to exclude women. The decision affirmed the judgment of the Court of Appeals of California, respecting a state statute requiring that business establishments admit women members. In 2000, Linda and Ray built their home in Sedona, beginning their visits to the Rotary Club of Sedona, where Linda first heard about the Imagination Library, now her passion. She is pleased to be a member of the club today. "For 45 years Rotary has been and continues to be a treasured part of our family’s life," she says. And Rotary Club of Sedona is proud to have one of the first female members of Rotary in its club! Club awards Paul Harris Fellow pin

The club's Foundation Director, David Simmer (Left), awarded a Paul Harris Fellow plus five pin to Dave Young. The Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute or who have contributions made in their name of $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation. PHF awards are given to Rotarians for every $1,000 they donate to the Rotary Foundation. The Rotary Foundation transforms gifts into service projects that change lives locally and around the world such as eradicating polio, disaster response fund, now helping Ukraine relief efforts, providing clean water, including the Navajo Water Project, promoting peace, education, and more. Rotary making strides in Polio eradication

David Simmer, past district 5495 governor and the club's foundation director, rolls out 30 feet of paper with 350,000 dots representing polio cases around the world in 1985 when Rotary International took on the eradication of the disease. Next David held up a small piece of paper with only five dots representing the few remaining cases left. "Due to the leadership of Rotary, 18 million children have been saved from this ravage." David adds the work has been possible by contributions Rotarians make to the Rotary Foundation's Polio Fund. If you would like to contribute please go to https://my.rotary.org/en/donate
